Oct 14, 2022 路 So for summary, 10w 40 is still okay but it is better to use a Synthetic 0W-30 or 5W-30. Is 0W 30 Good for BMW? BMW now recommends 0W30 for all models that called for a LL-01 5W30. Which one is better 0w20 or 5W30? 0W20 also provides better fuel economy than 5W30 in both colder and warmer environments. May 1, 2016 路 They sell Mobil 1 at Costco as well, but I think it's only in 5w30. I guess I am looking at: -Switch to a 5w30, either dino or synthetic but probably dino -Move to a 0w30, as it will probably also have fairly cold winters -Stick with 0w20, but stay with M1 AFE or move to the EP version, and try to stay with 1 year OCIs (?) Jun 7, 2016 路 Generally speaking the grade of the oil eg 0W-20 is the grade of oil is influenced for certain operating temperatures. The lower the number the thinner the oil specifically for really cold regions and really tight engines. Oil requires it to be 'tacky' for it to work best in the engine and lubricate the necessary components. Mar 27, 2008 路 The first number relates to cold temperature viscosities and the second number relates to operating temperature viscosities. 0W30 oils are not as thin as water. For that matter, 0W20 oils are not as thin as water either. Also, there is a pretty wide range of viscosities that are still called 30 weight oil. Aug 7, 2023 路 If you aren't tracking the car a day than you should be just fine on 0W20 oil, if your state usually hits over 105F in the Summer 0W30 isn't a bad idea in the long-term for some added protection but if this is just a road trip than there isn't any concern running the factory weight oil. The difference between 0W20 and 0W30 oil and which is superior, is that the thinner 0W20 is better for newer engines while the thicker 0W30 is better for older engines that burn some oil. The primary distinction between the 2 is the viscosity (thickness) at operating temperatures, where a greater value denotes a denser oil. Jan 25, 2022 路 I would not be surprised if that engine shreds M1 0W30 AFE as well, even down to a similar KV100 number after only 3000 miles or so. Keep an eye on it and don't count on an Xw30 grade oil to sustain itself any better than a 0w20 unless it is a dual rated HDEO or a Euro spec oil. t6tLGF.
